Profile
Scott Castro is an adjunct professor of health sciences at the University of Richmond and the senior director of health policy at the Medical Society of Virginia; a membership organization representing physicians, physician assistants, medical residents, and medical students before the legislative and executive branches of Virginia state government. He earned a master's degree in public policy from the American University School of Public Affairs, and is a graduate of the University of Richmond Class of 2009. He is also a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Sorensen Instutute for Political Leadership Political Leaders Program (PLP) Class of 2019. He is also a member of the 2018 class of professionals profiled in Style Weekly’s “Top 40 Under 40.”
He previously served as the primary policy expert on national kidney transplantation and allocation policy at the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). In this role, he helped lead the effort alongside nationally-renowned kidney surgeons and nephrologists to improve racial and socioeconomic equity in the allocation of donated kidneys and pancreata across the United States. He also previously served in policy roles within Virginia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) where he was instrumental to the development and initial implementation of the STEP-VA program to improve access to mental health and substance abuse services throughout Virginia.
